WFM Market News - June 27th

Hi Market Friends,

Summer has officially arrived and it looks like we’re expecting near perfect weather this Thursday. What better way to celebrate than an afternoon at the market mingling with fellow community members, listening to great local musicians, and discovering what’s fresh and in season?

Ray’s Family Farm returns to the market this week and we’re excited to welcome Quabbin Hill Farms to the Thursday vendor lineup.

SNAP and HIP customers, it’s almost the end of the month and the last market to use any remaining HIP benefit for June. Stop by the SNAP Tent for your $10 Market Match and to learn more.

As a reminder, the market will be open next Thursday on July 4th.

See you Thursday!

Soil pH Testing with WMMGA

Have your soil samples pH tested by a certified soil tester at the Western MA Master Gardener Association (WMMGA) tent this Thursday between 1PM-4PM for a $2 donation. Master Gardeners will answer your questions about soil as well as any other gardening questions you might have. What do you need to collect a soil sample?

  • Trowel, shovel or sampling tube
  • Bucket
  • Drying tray or plate
  • Zip-lock bag
You can collect samples from different sections of your yard (i.e., lawn, flower bed, vegetable garden). Make sure to keep the samples from each area separate. How do you collect samples? First, remove a thin slice or plug of soil from surface to proper depth. Sample depths: 3”-4” Lawn, 6”-8” flower/vegetable garden, 10”-12” trees/shrubs. Then collect 4 -6 samples for each small area, 8-12 samples for large areas. Mix the samples for one area together in bucket. Then scoop 1 cup mixed soil and spread it on a clean plate/tray to dry. Remove any twigs & large debris. Once it's dry, place the sample in a zip-lock bag that's labelled with approximate size of the sample area and the type - lawn, flowers, vegetables, etc.

Rachel’s Table is the premier food rescue and distribution program in Western Massachusetts, created by members of the Women’s Philanthropy Division of the Jewish Federation of Western Massachusetts to address food insecurity in the region. Bring your donations of unexpired non-perishable goods and/or fresh produce to the WFM Market Tent where it will be collected by Rachel’s Table volunteers after each market.

Downtown Westfield residents, stop by WEPRA's tent this Thursday to sign up for a free tree that will be planted for you by MA DCR, thanks to a Greening the Gateway Cities Program (GGCP) partnership grant. The goal of planting trees in Downtown Westfield is to increase and reestablish tree canopy cover for environmental and energy efficiency benefits. Stop by WEPRA's tent for more information and to sign up for a free tree. Can't make it to the market? Visit WEPRA's website for more information.
